Volunteer for Change/Join 100s of volunteers in schemes like "Leeds Goes Purple" to tackle litter, or help the Scouts plant trees. It helps Leeds hit its 2030 Green Goal while you make new friends. Find a local group today!##
Feed the Bank, Not the Bin/Donate spare or unopened food to Leeds food banks. It keeps food out of the bin and helps families across the city. FareShare Yorkshire gives out 2,250 tonnes of food a year, enough for 100,000 meals each week.##
Shop Local/Choosing Leeds shops and markets supports local traders, cuts transport emissions and keeps money in the community. If every adult spent £5 a week locally, it would add up to £13.5bn going straight back into local areas.##
Grow your own/Try growing your own fruit or veg at home or in a local garden. It’s a fun way to learn new skills and makes your area greener. It also means your food doesn't have to travel far in big trucks to get to your plate.##

Fix, Don’t Throw/Broke it? Don't bin it! Leeds has "repair cafés" where experts help you mend clothes, bikes, and toys for free. Fixing things keeps money in your pocket and stops waste. Most items can be saved—give it a try!##
Create a home for wildlife/Habitat loss is the number one threat to wildlife. Welcome wildlife to your garden by adding a bird box, a woodpile, a pond, or a bug hotel. Fancy making your own? Try making your own bird feeder and bug hotel.##

Leeds: Green Council of the Year!

Leeds City Council has officially been named the best "Green Council" in the country! We were presented with this national award to celebrate our city’s hard work in tackling climate change and making our neighborhoods cleaner, greener, and healthier for everyone.

Expanding our Electric Fleet The award recognizes our progress in switching to electric vehicles. We have already swapped nearly a quarter of our vans and bin wagons for electric ones, creating one of the largest green fleets in the UK to keep our air fresh.

District Heating Zones Our Leeds PIPES network was a big reason for the win. This clever system captures heat from the city’s rubbish and turns it into low-carbon warmth and hot water for over 4,000 homes and 70 major buildings across Leeds.

Reducing Landfill Waste We have achieved a massive reduction in waste. Ten years ago, over a quarter of our rubbish was buried in the ground—today, we have cut that to less than 0.2%, which is one of the most successful results in the country!.

Our Green Future: Parks and Nature:

Leeds has a 10-year plan called the Parks and Green Spaces Strategy. This is our commitment to making sure that as our city grows, our nature grows with it! It focuses on making our parks the best they can be for people and wildlife.

Planting for the Future We are working hard to grow our city’s canopy by planting thousands of new trees every single year. This helps clean our air and creates beautiful woodland areas for everyone to explore.

Homes for Wildlife We don’t just look after grass; we are protecting and expanding natural habitats like wildflower meadows, thick woods, and quiet ponds. These spaces provide vital homes for bees, birds, and other local wildlife to thrive.

Top Quality Parks To make sure every park is great, we use a special standard called the “Leeds Quality Park” measure. This helps us check that parks all across the city are kept to a high standard for the community.

Cool Attractions Our strategy also looks after amazing places like Tropical World. These attractions give everyone a chance to learn about exotic animals and plants right here in Leeds!

Seacroft Forest Garden:

What is it? Seacroft Forest Garden is a community-led green space in East Leeds. It was created by local residents who turned a messy, unused plot of land into a thriving "edible garden". It follows permaculture principles, which means every plant is chosen because it is either edible or useful to nature.

Learning & Growing in 2026 The garden is a busy "outdoor classroom" where students and neighbours work together:

  • Healthy Holidays: In 2026, the garden continues to host groups of up to 30 children during school holidays to learn about nature and food.

  • Giving Back: Much of the food grown—like potatoes, peas, and broccoli—is donated to the local Seacroft food pantry and church food banks.

  • Wildlife Havens: The garden has a canopy of fruit trees, 70 fruit bushes, and a "living willow dome" that provides a home for birds and insects.
